A chimp used as a guinea pig for an Alzheimer’s cure develops human like intelligence, leading to an uprising. If the overarching message of the original Planet of the Apes was: “Be good to your fellow man, or the animals will take over,” the message of the modern version is: “Be kind to other animals, or the animals will take over, and we’ll darn well deserve it.” Rise starts with animal testing, and explores other misuses of human power, plus a few topical concepts like epigenetics. It’s part of a set of contemporary movies that use an action-thriller setting to question humanocentrism – along with Jurassic World and Peter Jackson’s King Kong.
